i purchase some seeds to plant but they say annual which i know it means every year they come back but the other said tender perennial and biennial being a beggener i would like to see some flowers for the summer in my so call garden thank you.
When planting seeds can anyone tell me what does biennial, tender perennial means first time garderner?
Oh my goodness! Annual grows, blooms and sets seed in one year and dies. Biennials grow 1 year, bloom the 2nd and set seed and die. Perennials will last for 3 or more years depending on the type of flower it is. Daylilies and coneflowers are perennial, not annuals! Tender perennials- if you are in a colder area will not come back. They are used like an annual in cold zones but will come back if grown in the zones that they are hardy. Most annuals will give you season long color unlike most perennials that will bloom for a few weeks during the season. A mixture of both is great!
Reply:bi-annual blooms in it's second year, perennial comes back every year or lives more then a year, if it is tender it can't take a freeze, annual only lives one year, they must be planted every year.
In TN I raise a lot of perennials because they last for years %26amp; I don't have to replant.
Reply:An annual is a plant that dies after its blooming season. A perennial (meaning year after year) will live in the ground (do not dig up)for 3 or more years. A bi annual blooms in the 2nd year of being planted and then dies. But most bi annuals self sow readily.
Here are some examples Annuals: marigolds, zinnias, snapdragons. Perennials: shasta daisy, purple coneflowers daylilies.Bi annuals: hollyhocks foxglove.
Tender perennials means that plant won't survive cold northern winters but will in warmer southern states.
It is also important to know that many perennials will not bloom for up to 3 years after starting from seed. If you want instant color buy potted plants. It also helps to know your planting zone as to weather a plant is considered tender, hardy etc...
Reply:The biennials will bloom once every two years. Sucks. The perennials should bloom this year, and are also capable of blooming next year, but you have to dig them up this fall and replant them again in the spring. Sucks. Just get annuals for flowers this year.
