I have just cut off the large head of my sunflower, have brushed off the wilted tiny flowers on top of each seed. The seeds are white. Put the complete sunflower head in the airing cupboard. Now what ? Am I doing the right thing ?
Sunflower seeds from homegrown sunflower?
Yes, you're doing the right thing, let it dry, you have all winter for it at least until April at the earliest, but best to plant on the second half of May.
Once you know the head has dried, that is when the seeds come out easily, put the seeds in paper envelopes, label and date, then store in cool and dry place. In nice fancy stationary envelopes they make a nice Easter gift for peole keen in gardening.
Reply:Keep the biggest seeds and put the rest out for the wild birds.
Or you can do as i do instead of buying cut flowers i have some sunflowers in a pot and just about to flower on my windowsill.
Reply:should be fine,
Reply:your doing it rite... just keep an eye on it that it wont get moldy if not enough air circulation, or dampness..
Reply:You are following the same course as I tried a few years ago and, believe me, I'm no gardener. It worked for me, I still have a jar full of seeds.
Reply:You are doing fine but watch you don't have seeds all over the airing cupboard, sow the dried seed again in spring.
The seeds can also be eaten.
