where is the best buy for sun flower seeds
Sun flower?
There are 2 types of Sunflower seeds: Black (oil) and striped (confection)
The black is used to feed the birds. The striped can be used to feed bird or can roasted and eaten.
If your planting sunflower to feed the birds, the black is the way to go. If your planning to plant a large area, your best bet is to go to a farm Co-Op and pick up the seed. It's fresher and cheaper.
The size of the plants will depend on how rich the soil is. If it's heavy clay, you'll need to add fertilizer and not too much watering. If it's "Silty-Loam" not as much fertilizer but more water and if it's sandy, lots of water and lots of fertilizer.
Best thing to do is take a sample (about 1 cup full) to your County soils specialist and have them test it. They'll let you know what (if any) the soil is lacking. Cost is about $15.00
Reply:Grocery stores, garden centers. The seeds are very inexpensive and there are many different varieties to choose from. I grow many types in my garden every year, always trying some new color and size.
Reply:Seriously - in your grocery store....look in the pet food aisle for the black oil sunflower seeds for birds....
I've been doing this for years - they grow a HUGE head sunflower, like 6 feet tall with multiple flowers on one stock.
