I live in northeast Ohio and want to grow my own veggies (tomatoes, peppers) as well as some fairly easy 'starter' flowers (daisies, sweatpea, forget me nots, etc.). I planted some flowers last year and had success, but since I planted them in early June, they didn't bloom until late in the summer. What would be a good time for me to start growing my plants so that I could enjoy them longer? Also, any suggestions on some easy flowers for a beginner like me? :) Thanks for your help!
When should I start my seeds?
Most seeds do best when started indoors 6-12 weeks before you plan on planting them in the garden. The reason there is such a range is that some just grow faster than others. You could start them all at 12 weeks, but sweet peas grow pretty fast and at 12 weeks will have woven through all your seed flats, while daisies and other more polite plants will be looking great at that age.
The best source is the back of the seed packet, each will give you a narrower range for those specific seeds. Not all plants take well to transplanting either, and the seed packets will let you know which those are.
Oh, and if you planted forget-me-nots last year, then you won't need more. Those are the most invasive little buggers! My daugher tossed a handful in one of my beds and I have been fighting them from taking over the world for several years now.
Reply:cultivate your ground in late march and put fertilizer on it in middle april and turn the ground over.....the beginning of may, turn the ground over and rake the top of it and plant your seeds in rows. usually its good to grown beans and peas from plants and put them along the fence so they can grow up the fence.....easy to grow veggies are spring onions, carrots, beets, tomatoes, brussel sprouts (they grow on a stem) cauliflower, and along the edge of the garden plant little hills of dirt so you can plant cucumber, pumpkin, squash, etc. good luck with your garden.
Reply:I would start them inside now and after the last frost of the year, put them outside on warm days...if you are worried about cold Ohio nights, bring them in again.
I started my tomatoes by seed last year, and didn't get any fruit larger then a cherry before the first frost so I'm starting the first of March this year and will keep them inside until warmer days get here.
As for flowers...sorry, I didn't have any luck with starting them from seed, and gave up
Reply:any day of the year of course never on cold times or winter seeds can be grown any time of the blessing year
