I want to get in some early sowings of herbs and flowers, but I don't have room in my house. Is there any point sowing seeds in my greenhouse (dips to about 1 degree C at night but never below freezing) or is it too cold?
Too cold to sow seeds?
Seeds sown in the greenhouse will survive, but won't thrive and grow much under these conditions.Consider purchasing a small heated cloche to cover some of the seed trays,or a thermostatically controlled heater which will kick in and prevent the temperature dropping too much.
Reply:Too early to sow seed,Wait till the end of march.
Reply:Bottom heat is your answer for growing such plants in a greenhouse environment.
There are several kinds you can use. One is electrically heater plates, that are about 12 x 20 in size and cost about $25 each. Those are 75 watt with a controlled temp. There are also larger ones available. You can also use an ordinary hotplate turned down and set to a soil temperature of about 85F, depending on the size of your operation.
If you have a boiler you can consider using steam heat coils in a bed of rock. That is what I use and it works very well to place flats of seeds to germinate and to grow on that. I germinate flower seedlings, tomato plants, herbs and the like on this sort of a bed.
Without bottom heat, you cant do much with herbs and other plants that dont do particularly well with a high atmosphere temperature. Use bottom heat.
Reply:I don't know where you live but recommendation here in Canada is not to plant before the end of May as there can still be a risk of frost.
If your greenhouse isn't temperature controlled, I'd wait!
Reply:Some seeds need a little bit of cold to sprout well. But if this cold is going to continue for a while I wouldn't do it.
There is one exception: If you can build a little cold frame around your seeds to protect them from the excessive chill.
Good luck!
Reply:We bought a heated mat for our dog when we went away for a few days.
Dog did not use it so I put it in the greenhouse and I use it to keep planter trays warm.
